Jeremy Walker, Democrat candidate for state Senate in the 58th district, shared ideas for higher funding education at a news conference Wednesday.

Walker, who hails from Red Bud, was joined by State Sen. John Sullivan, D-Rushville, to talk about his desire to see the General Assembly override Gov. Pat Quinn's amendatory veto cutting $100 million from state universities and community colleges.

Walker also proposed a funding formula that gives 33.3 percent of new funding to higher education and 66.7 percent for grades K through 12.

"In this day and age, there's no question that education is the most important asset you can have," Walker said.

Walker obtained his law degree from SIUC.

"Because of the opportunity this university gave me, I was able to stay home and make a living," Walker said.
